ATU Local 279 Ratifies New Collective Agreement with the City of Ottawa
Ottawa – The members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 279 have voted to ratify a new three-year collective agreement with the City of Ottawa. This was not an easy decision for our membership. Many struggled with the reality that this deal falls short of closing the gap with industry standards, and that several key issues remain unresolved.
But in the end, our members once again demonstrated their deep sense of duty to the people of Ottawa. They refused to use the public as pawns in this process. Instead, they chose to put the safety, reliability, affordability, and quality of transit service ahead of their own interests—because that is what the residents of a capital city in the best nation in the world deserve.
This agreement represents progress, but also a commitment. Our members will continue to serve, and continue to demand improvements, standing shoulder to shoulder with the people of Ottawa in the fight to rebuild and strengthen our transit system. Addressing the longstanding shortcomings of OC Transpo is essential not just for our workforce, but for the riders who depend on us every day.
By ratifying this agreement, we have ensured there will be no disruption in service. The people of Ottawa can count on us to be there for them. At the same time, we must now turn our attention to another urgent matter: the dedicated workers of Para Transpo, who have been without a contract since December 2024. These members assist those who need us most, day in and day out, and their recognition and fair treatment are essential.
ATU Local 279 will continue to care for this city and its people.
We ride together—with Ottawa, for Ottawa.
